The Holistic Wellness Model

wellness.self.centred

The holistic wellness model recognizes the body, mind and spirit as an integrated and coherent whole. To live mindfully is to live holistically.

Wellness can be defined as a state where one is centered in oneself and functioning at one’s optimum level – happy, healthy and whole – engaged and able to see and create meaning and purpose in life.  As such, the holistic wellness model provides an excellent assessment tool for life satisfaction. The part can never be well unless the whole is well. Plato
The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Aristotle

Attributes of the Holistic Wellness Model

The holistic wellness model recognizes the human being:

  • as a dynamic system of systems in an interdependent relationship with their social context in an ever-changing natural environment.
  • as possessing an inherent ability for self-healing, empowerment and self-regulation to be activated and developed under the right conditions.

Wholeness may be thought of as a dynamic process of being in right relationship at all the levels of the human experience-body, mind, emotion and spirit. Janet Quinn

illness.2.wellness.continuum

The illness to wellness continuum above, developed by Jack Travis, MD, illustrates the journey from illness and treatment to health and wellness.

At the centre of the illness to wellness continuum is a point of neutrality, where the western medical approach concludes that their job is finished as the person appears to be free of symptoms. Being free of symptoms however does not necessarily reflect a state of optimum health or well-being.

Effect of Stress on Health and Wellbeing

The effect and impact of unmanaged stress on health and wellness is significant both in the workplace and in personal life. When stress, disease or injury occur, the natural flow of universal life energy is affected, resulting in an imbalance. Stress relief and self care are important components to overall health and well being and help to promote safe, healthy home and workplace environments
