Management vs Leadership…A Dance of Head and Heart

Harmony and productivity result when management and leadership work in partnership, doing things right and doing the right things.

Entrepreneurs, artists and other self-governed individuals are both President and CEO of their own enterprise.

As President, you lead from the heart to:

  • Develop your personal mission
  • Define your direction and
  • Create the conditions needed for effective management of your passion – your primary resource.

As CEO, you manage with your head, to:

  • Plan the work and work the plan,
  • Delegate tasks to the designated roles you play in your life,
  • Make adjustments based on results, available resources, needs and opportunities, against time.

Together, you set SMART goals and establish priorities, working collaboratively, each supporting the other, each knowing their role and executing it efficiently in the KAIZEN spirit of continuous improvement.

We should take care not to make the intellect our god; it has, of course, powerful muscles but no personality. It cannot lead; it can only serve. Albert Einstein

Roles and Responsibilities

While setting direction and controlling the rate of growth is a function of leadership, responsible use of resources such as time and money, is a function of management. The head is held accountable and supported by the heart.

This team of ONE, evaluate outcomes against the framework of the mission, acknowledge progress and celebrate success.

Attitude and Attention

The primary resource available to the head is attention.

Like time or money, attention when seen as a resource, can make the things focused on, develop and thrive.

Attitude and intention, whether conscious or unconscious, is the primary resource of the heart. It affects perception and impacts performance outcomes.

The power of intention and positive attitude combined with attention directed through strategic action, that is…action aligned with personal mission enables passion to power performance resulting in sustainable success.

Attention training is what mindfulness is all about.  Mindfulness coaching can help make this partnership of head and heart work. The coaching process supports both the individual and their enterprise resulting in extraordinary outcomes. Check out what our clients say.
