Solution-focused coaching is an approach to change management built upon the principles and practices of solution-focused therapy. The approach focuses on desired outcomes and related competencies. The solution-focused approach helps people become aware of their strengths and available resources and in so doing inspires empowered action.
Premise
The solution-focused approach assumes personal change is a constant. Having a clear vision of a preferred future helps the client distance themselves from the current situation enough to assess it honestly from various perspectives, accept it for what it is and attune their attention to positive, emerging directions for change that are already in process.
Exploring and brainstorming options helps generate ideas for creative solutions.
The solution-focused approach builds on some basic assumptions – namely:
- Change is a given – constant and certain.
- Clients are the experts on their lives, must want to change and set their own goals.
- Clients are resourceful. They have the ability to transcend and transform their problems.
- Now is all there is. We bring the future into the present.
- Emphasis is on identifying actions that can make a difference.
- Clients must have the desire and will to take action.
- Small steps taken consistently can lead to big change.
Application to Kaizen Leadership Institute Practices
I help my clients shift from problem to opportunity thinking. The imagination can unlock the magic in every situation. Miracle questioning invites the client to imagine life problem-free and allows them to dream…to imagine the possible…the ideal as if already realized. Their inherent creativity, so often blocked through fear of failure or fear of success is activated and engaged. My holistic solution-focused coaching approach gives new hope and frees energy for clients to take inspired strategic action.
