Hungarian positive psychologist, Mihály Csíkszentmihályi, is recognized for his study of happiness and creativity. He developed and mapped the concept of flow and defined it as a feeling of “being in the zone” – a state of complete absorption, mental concentration and immersion with the activity and situation at hand.
Premise
To achieve a flow state, a balance between challenge and skill must be matched at a high level and adjusted periodically, as skills are enhanced. The process cultivates intrinsic motivation and optimizes positive experience, fostering task commitment.
Application to Kaizen Leadership Institute Practices
Recognizing emotional states as indicative of where you are in relation to the FLOW experience, provides a useful coaching assessment tool that helps clients develop self awareness and make informed choices.
