Dialogue opens us up to possibilities not yet imagined enabling a deeper and clearer understanding of our own and others’ unique and authentic natures, needs and wants leading to improved decision-making, improved relationships and an enhanced sense of personal responsibility and presence.
Dialogue is a conversational approach and technique used in 1:1 coaching and in large and small team coaching learning experiences.
It is particularly useful in helping people “own” their own lived experience and enables them to speak from a grounded, centered place of personal clarity. No one can argue your lived experience. It’s simply what it is. Speaking directly from your experience with compassionate self-regard reveals to you (and others) how you feel about your experience.
Premises
- The theoretical physicist, David Bohm, maintained that “thought is a system” – an interconnected network of concepts, ideas and assumptions that pass seamlessly between people and society as a whole.
- If thought is faulty in its functioning, it is experienced system-wide.
- Self-awareness, facilitated through dialogue, can correct distortions introduced by poor or faulty thinking.
- People are no longer primarily in opposition…. . rather they are participating in a pool of common meaning which is capable of constant development and change
- Dialogue opens up the possibility of transforming relationships between people as well as the very nature of consciousness in which these relationships arise.
David Bohm originated a form of dialogue where people, agreeing to leave behind debate tactics that attempt to convince self and others, speak from their direct lived, felt experience. The somatic/felt experience is informed by the neural receptors throughout the body.
The overarching aim of Dialogue is to come to clarity; exploring assumptions of thinking, meaning, communication and social effects thereby enabling the possibility of clarifying perception and correcting the unintended, unconscious consequences of the thought process.
