Change is all there is….you are continually changing and the context of your life – your family, workplace, home life, community, environment and the world is continually changing. Technological developments have always driven change from the industrial revolution to the great cultural, social and economic change catalyzed by the digital era we are currently living. Yet, perhaps never before has the rate of change been quite as extreme as it is today.
How we respond to the pressures affected by this change is what shapes our lived experience. Whether we adapt to the changing nature of our world and how effectively, depends on a multitude of factors – our attachments, values, needs and wants and our ability to stay centered and regulate them and ourselves and manage our focus.
The practice of mindful observation, reflection, introspection and contemplation can help to keep us grounded, centered and sane – aware of who we are, what we value and in a position of choice. Without these practices we can easily be caught up and trapped by the frenzy of the new, the latest, overwhelmed by the myriad of distractions that keep us running, fending off, grasping, clutching at and reacting to what’s coming at us from all directions. The experience of overwhelm can lead to shutting down, withdrawal, burn-out and escapism through addictive behaviours.
