Healing Fatigue

When you are fatigued that’s it, you’re fatigued. There’s nothing more! In a state of fatigue, you are aware primarily of your inner state of extreme tiredness, which typically results from mental or physical overexertion or perhaps from a chronic condition or illness.

Fatigue is marked by a lessening of joy or enthusiasm for something you previously delighted in or enjoyed. It is a state of being that leaves you feeling exhausted, depleted, lethargic, dismal, hopeless, weary, weak, dull, listless and depressed.

When not addressed in a timely manner, fatigue can lead to burnout; depletion and eventually illness. Anyone who has experienced burnout knows that burnout, otherwise known as an erosion of the self, physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually, is not a pretty sight and can take years to correct.

So, better to catch fatigue early and bring the body, emotions, mind, and spirit into right relationship – into harmony, while that is still possible – while you still can.

“Healing has been described as a “process of bringing parts of ones self together at a deep level of inner knowledge resulting in an integrated, balanced, whole with each part having equal importance and value.” Dossey, Keegan, Guzzetta, Kolkmeir

The best way I have discovered of allowing parts of myself to come together at a deep level of inner knowing when deeply fatigued is by receiving a Therapeutic Touch energy field healing session. Best, when I’m feeling so deeply fatigued, is to schedule several sessions a week over the course of a two – three week period. This allows the system to integrate the benefits of the sessions and begin to recalibrate towards a state of inner balance and wholeness.

The healing process starts with a period of release… of letting go…of trusting the process…And it’s the healing practitioner that facilitates the process and creates the conditions for the healing to occur.

Once my system has taken in what’s been received through the complementary healing intervention, I begin to become aware of deep inner energy rebalancing process underway. As energy improves, I begin to participate consciously in this healing and rebalancing process.

Physically, I can:

  • Ensure I get good night’s sleep (in bed by 10 pm)
  • Drink lots of water (ideally with lemon juice or a cap full of apple cider vinegar) to flush the system of toxins
  • Have a glass of water upon rising in the morning
  • Meditate for 20 minutes
  • Eat a healthy breakfast (oats, yogurt, fruit, flax seed, nuts)
  • Stretch or yoga (mindful exercise)
  • Go for a walk, ride my bike – gentle exercise in nature

Emotionally, I can:

  • Reflect on the things that have made you happy or brought you joy in the past
  • Make a list of things and people I appreciate and love (think on them one at a time and let the thought of them enrich my heart)
  • Practice gratitude (make a list of all that I are thankful for?)
  • Be gentle and kind with myself
  • Reflect on my strengths, gifts and talents and how they’ve helped me through difficult times in the past.

Mentally, I can:

  • Rest in stillness, quiet my mind in deep meditation

Spiritually, I can:

  • Wonder at the beauty of the Universe
  • Marvel at the mystery of living and healing
  • Open to the goodness that is in all there is
  • Surrender my need to do and just be
  • Allow myself to be held and supported by others
  • Give myself permission to receive
  • Ask for help, guidance, and support.

As my health and life energy flow improves, I can become more actively engaged in my own self-healing and begin to direct the process. Having a coach to partner with certainly, helps!

Physically, I can:

  • Begin to play with the structure and rhythm of my day
  • Explore what works best to improve my sense of vitality
  • Experiment with intensifying physical exertion (using big muscles – thighs as in climbing stairs or hills to generate energy) and balancing it with periods of rest or short naps.
  • Experiment with diet – eating more fruits and vegetables, less starch; proteins in nuts and seeds

Emotionally, I can:

  • Seek out things, events and people I appreciate to connect with for short periods at a time.
  • Journal; reflecting on things that make me happy, excited; bring me joy etc.
  • Practice self-care in 1001 different ways.
  • Appreciate those that care for me.

Mentally, I can:

  • Rest in stillness, quiet my mind in deep meditation

Spiritually, I can:

  • Wonder at the beauty of the Universe
  • Marvel at the mystery of living and healing
  • Open to the goodness, love and light that is all around us and flows through us with every breath
  • Surrender my need to do and just be
  • Allow myself to be held and supported by others
  • Give myself permission to receive
  • Ask for help, guidance and support
  • Begin to listen inwardly to that which wants to emerge; wants to be heard.

Slowly, over time, as you begin to remember who you are and what you want, you become clear about what it is you value. Your inner landscape begins to shift from one of desolation, despair, and fatigue to one of hope. With hope comes the possibility and opportunity for new life. It is at this time when hope stirs new life into being that my focus begins to shift from healing or as W.H. Auden so beautifully called it, “A coaxing of nature”  to one of coaching the leader within to grow herself as best she can, with a compassionate, independent and objective coaching support.

As someone who has experienced both deep periods of fatigue and burnout from lifestyles that were out of control in favour of Doing rather than Being, I have a special understanding, appreciation and compassion for others who suffer from this condition. It is what brought me to the healing path and led me to become a healer, a coach, mindfulness trainer and founder of the Therapeutic Touch Institute.
