American psychotherapist and educator Lawrence LeShan in his book How to Meditate, The Acclaimed Guide to Self-Discovery recognizes the aim of meditation practices to be “inner growth and development – to help the individual reach their own special, fullest potential in being, relating and creating” and “doing consciously what would otherwise be done unconsciously.”
Premises
Meditation practice involves focusing the mind on a particular object, thought or activity to achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm state of being. A form of mental training and discipline, meditation practice “brings us home to ourselves”, strengthens our sense of self while relieving stress and enhancing our ability to function in the world with an invigorated sense of joy, vitality, peace and strength.
Application to Kaizen Leadership Institute Practices
Meditation training starts with mindful breathing. A good meditation is simple, straightforward and oriented to a particular problem. While simple, it is not easy – the mind wanders. Meditation practice, as part of a coaching program, helps the client develop self-accountability, strengthening self-trust and self-respect. I introduce foundational meditation practices to clients early in the coaching process to help them manage stress, develop emotional calm and mental stability.
