Mindfulness Coaching for Physicians and Healthcare Professionals

Mindfulness Coaching for PhysiciansCan mindfulness coaching help physicians and healthcare professionals sustain their professional commitment and preserve their integrity amidst the turbulence of constant change, increasing demands and shrinking resources?

Today’s healthcare professionals and executives are called upon to facilitate change in a health care industry with unprecedented complexity and demand for accountability.

Physicians, hospital executives and other healthcare professionals are grappling with:

  • Unprecedented rate of change in health care delivery
  • Increased demand for service
  • Changes to funding formulas
  • Health information or misinformation available online
  • Changes to government-covered health services

The impact, not surprisingly, is role overload and stress.

Role overload has been linked to increased levels of

  • Anxiety
  • Fatigue
  • Burnout
  • Depression
  • Emotional and physiological stress
  • Decreased work life satisfaction.

What is the Problem?

According to the Canadian Medical Association  increasing demands are leading to job strain and role overload, accompanied by an increased sense of lack of control to further exacerbate the situation.

A research study, titled Demands, values, and burnout Relevance for Physicians, (Leiter et al., 2009) published in the Canadian Family Physician,  VOL 55 December 2009, “identified workload and value congruence, interact differently for women and men. When experiencing congruence of their personal values with health care systems values, women encountered less distress in demanding situations than when they experienced incongruence.”

According to a February 2010 study, The Etiology and Reduction of Role Overload in Canada’s Health Care Sector,  (Duxbury et al.,) “noted that compared to other professions, health professionals have the:

  • Lowest level of trust in their employers
  • Lowest level of commitment to their employers
  • Lowest ratings of workplace communications and
  • Least influence on workplace decisions
  • Least supportive and healthy workplaces.”

Can coaching help healthcare professionals develop professional brilliance and personal resilience despite their challenging working conditions?
