Therapeutic Touch – Mindfulness in Practice

Therapeutic Touch® is a holistic, evidence-based, integrative therapy that incorporates the intentional and compassionate use of universal energy to promote balance and well-being in all aspects of the individual: body, emotions, mind and spirit.

Developed in the early 1970’s through the pioneering work of Dolores Krieger, PhD, RN, a professor at New York University, and Dora Kunz, a natural healer, Therapeutic Touch is a body of knowledge and practice of self care and healing, supported by the work of nursing theorist Dr. Martha Rogers and regulated by the Therapeutic Touch Network of Ontario. Taught and practiced throughout the world, Therapeutic Touch is offered and taught as a complementary modality in a hospitals, nursing homes, hospices, cancer and wellness clinics throughout Ontario.

Basic Assumptions

  1. Human beings are open energy systems.
  2. In a state of health, life energy flows freely in, through and out of a person’s energy field in an orderly fashion
  3. Stress, injury, illness or disease is a disruption in the balanced flow of energy.
  4. The Therapeutic Touch process is transpersonal. Human beings have the natural ability to transcend and transform their conditions of living, under the appropriate circumstances.

Premises

  1. Therapeutic Touch is both an art and a science. Therapeutic Touch is a healing practice, rather than a curing practice.
  2. A Therapeutic Touch practitioner must have a compassionate desire and intention to facilitate healing. Energy follows the attention of your mind.
  3. A Therapeutic Touch practitioner must be unattached to the outcome of the Therapeutic Touch session.
  4. Competency is gained through practice and continued study. Therapeutic Touch is experiential. It can be taught and learned only through personal experience.

Application to Kaizen Leadership Institute practises

Therapeutic Touch is both a life skill and a complementary healing modality. It is knowledge that is best lived – a lifeway, integrated into being. For the practitioner, the Therapeutic Touch session  is an active meditation – a practice of sustaining a centered state of consciousness often referred to as mindfulness practice in action.

Therapeutic Touch foundational practices are introduced to coaching clients and students of Therapeutic Touch and applied for stress management, personal wellness, self-care and empowerment and help the practitioner cultivate an engaged, mindful, presence and compassionate intentionality.

Learning Therapeutic Touch is a natural human potential that develops sensitivity, awareness, perceptual skills. Learn more.
